Cook with Pulses for Terra Madre Day 2023

By December 7, 2023 Blog, Recipes

Terra Madre Day is celebrated on December 10th, to commemorate the signing of the Slow Food Manifesto in 1989.

Our Russian River chapter is celebrating the Day with a Holiday Party and Cookie Exchange.

The theme for Terra Madre Day 2023 is Regeneraction.

Regeneration by CHANGING the way we eat, by LEARNING about sustainable food, and by TAKING ACTION for better food systems, supporting our small local producers. These are the effective ways to create positive change.

How can our holiday party and cookie exchange be a gateway into regeneraction?

Slow Food has been encouraging us to eat more beans, peas, and lentils. It is good for the soul and the planet. Let’s Beandream! #slowbeans, #lovepulses

A legume-rich diet is good for the environment; legumes require fewer inputs than other sources of protein and enrich the soil they’re grown in. Their cultivation also produces far less emissions and uses less water than farming animals.

Try Deborah Madison’s Crispy Chickpea Triangles from her book Vegetable Literacy to create a delicious finger food offering.

Or to bake cookies, what about Julia Mueller’s Double Chocolate Vegan Black Bean Cookies or the Legume Chef’s Chickpea Cookies with that touch of cardamom?

Happy Baking!

PS. A 2018 recipient of our Snail of Approval, Tierra Vegetables in Santa Rosa, grows Heirloom Beans.
