At Quivira Winery, 4900 Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg
Sunday, November 7, 2010, 3pm-7pm
As Thanksgiving draws near, Slow Food Russian River and Quivira Vineyards & Winery are celebrating the season with a special Harvest Dinner to support the 4-H Heritage Breeds project.
The event is Sunday, November 7 at Quivira’s beautiful, Biodynamic winery estate in Healdsburg. Acclaimed Chef Chris Cosentino of Incanto Restaurant in San Francisco will prepare a 4-course meal showcasing heritage turkeys raised by local 4-H families. Each course will be paired with Quivira wines.
The special event includes a live auction of heritage turkeys and a silent auction of travel and wine packages, just in time for holiday meals and gift-giving.
This is the seventh year that the Slow Food Russian River chapter has helped local 4-H families raise the birds that have been an integral part of Thanksgiving dinners for many generations. The heritage birds to be served at the dinner include the Narragansett, the Bourbon Red and the Standard Bronze.
The American Heritage Turkey was listed as a threatened species due to the popularity of the less flavorful but easier to raise White Breasted Turkeys, until Slow Food and a few producers decided to raise the birds and sell them direct to the consumers. As food lovers quickly discovered the better texture and flavor of Heritage Turkeys the species was taken off the endangered list. Heritage Turkeys are still not readily available in Sonoma County and Slow Food Russian River is trying to change that by auctioning off the 4-H heritage turkeys at the dinner. and by selling them direct to consumers through Slow Food Russian River.
