This July, Karen Preuss’s color photos of Sebastopol apples are going on the road and appearing on the walls at San Francisco’s Canessa Gallery. The two-dozen photos in this Apple Photo Exhibit tell a compelling story about the decline and the revival of the Gravenstein apple industry. Once the pride of Sonoma, thousands of Gravenstein apple trees were cut down to make room for grapes. The “Gravs,” as locals call them, also lost out in the competition for consumer dollars when the State of Washington began to produce more apples that were less expensive and with a longer shelf life.

Preuss’s photos were part of the Slow Food Russian River “Save the Gravs” campaign of the Gravenstein Apple Presidium that helps revive and publicize the local apple industry. Every August, Sonoma County Farm Trails puts on the Gravenstein Apple Fair at Ragle Ranch Park in Sebastopol.

Thousands of adults and just as many children attend the event where they eat newly picked apples, drink freshly squeezed apple juice and show their support for local agriculture. This year the fair will be held August 11 & 12.

Preuss’s photos depict apples, apple pickers, and in one especially dramatic picture, the stumps of apple trees in a once productive orchard.

Canessa Gallery, the site for the exhibit, is located at 708 Montgomery Street in San Francisco’s Financial District. The exhibit begins on 1 July 2018 and closes at the end of month. The opening reception, which starts at 7 p.m., takes place on Friday July 6, 2018. It’s free and open to the public.
